The Gifts of The Spirit
What are Spiritual gifts
According to 1 Corinthians.12: 8 spiritual gifts are special endowments or abilities given by the grace and extraordinary power of the Holy Spirit operating in believers in order to bless the body and for the common good of the body as a whole.
Now in 1 Corinthians 12: 8 Paul begins to break down the spiritual gifts into 3 main categories of gifts and how they operate.
Now there are distinctive varieties and distributions of endowments (gifts, [a]extraordinary powers distinguishing certain Christians, due to the power of divine grace operating in their souls by the Holy Spirit) and they vary, but the [Holy] Spirit remains the same.-
5 And there are distinctive varieties of service and ministration, but it is the same Lord [Who is served].
6 And there are distinctive varieties of operation [of working to accomplish things], but it is the same God Who inspires and energizes them all in all.
7 But to each one is given the manifestation of the [Holy] Spirit [the evidence, the spiritual illumination of the Spirit] for the common good and profit.
So here he mentions 3 things in relation to Spiritual gifts: varieties of Extraordinary powers, Varieties of Service and Ministration , and Varieties of Operation.
9 Power Gifts
The varieties of Extraordinary power are also known as the 9 spiritual Power gifts.
1 Cor. 12: 7
To one there is given through the Spirit a message of wisdom, to another a message of knowledge by means of the same Spirit, 9 to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by that one Spirit, 10 to another miraculous powers, to another prophecy, to another discernment & distinguishing between spirits, to another speaking in different kinds of tongues,[a] and to still another the interpretation of tongues.[b] 11 All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and he distributes them to each one, just as he determines.
1) The Gift of Wisdom:
The gift of wisdom is the ability to make decisions and give guidance in accordance with God’s perfect will in a situation either in church matters or in life. It goes beyond earthly knowledge and is linked to having Godly counsel and understanding. It is also closely aligned with the gift of knowledge.
2) The Gift of the Word of Knowledge
The Gift of Knowledge is the ability to have an in-depth understanding of a spiritual issue or situation without prior knowledge of it.This gift operates closely with the gift of wisdom. Knowledge is knowing what is happening or occurring in a given situation and wisdom is knowing what to do about it or how to manage it correctly.
3) The Gift of Faith:
The Gift of Faith being able to trust God and encourage others to trust God, no matter the circumstances. It is supernatural confidence in God’s promises, power, and presence. This type of faith equips people and encourages people to take heroic stands for God – it is more than just the average Christians faith.
4)The Gift of Healing
The Gift of Healing is the miraculous ability to use God’s healing power to restore a person who is sick, injured, or suffering. To be a conduit for that healing power over and over again. This also can include emotional healing. This gift sometimes works closely with the gift of miracles.
5) The Gift of Miracles
The Gift of Miracles is being able to perform signs and wonders that give authenticity to God’s Word and the Gospel message. This is a signs and wonders gift- that lifts people’s faith.
6) The Gift of Prophecy
The Gift of Prophecy is foretelling the future and Interpreting the divine will and purpose of God in inspired preaching and teaching. The gift of prophecy is not the same thing as being a prophet because a Prophet is calling position that takes years- you can read more about that on my PROPHECY PAGE A Christian can have the gift of prophecy to know and share the message of the future and what God is saying about it in order to encourage the body. A prophet will have the gift of prophecy as well as the gift of wisdom and knowledge, faith, and discernment.
7) The Gift of discernment of spirits
The Gift of Discerning Spirits is the ability to determine whether or not a message, person, or event is truly from God. The Holy Spirit gives the gift of discernment to enable certain Christians to clearly recognize and distinguish between the influence of God, Satan, the world, and the flesh in a given situation it is being able to distinguish, discern, judge or appraise a person, statement, situation, or environment. In the New Testament it describes the ability to distinguish between spirits and to discern good and evil as well.
8) The Gift of Tongues ,
The Gift of Tongues is the ability to speak in a foreign language Human or Angelic, that you do not have knowledge of, in order to communicate with someone who speaks that language. Human and angelic.
9) The Gift of Interpretation of Tongues.
The Gift of Interpretation of Tongues is the ability to translate the tongues being spoken and communicate it back to others in your own language. This again is both human and angelic.
These are the 9 extraordinary power gifts that Paul speaks about operating in the church. In 1 Cor 12: V28- 30 Paul goes on to mention Ministries and Services that he also classifies as a type of gift.
